How the UCAT is weighted

No fixed UCAT cut-off. The university states the threshold varies each year with the strength of the applicant pool and cannot be advised in advance. UCAT is scored excluding the Situational Judgement Test to rank applicants who already meet the academic and personal statement requirements.

A-level requirements

Standard offer AAA, and applicants must be predicted AAA including Biology or Human Biology and Chemistry. Resits are not considered. General Studies, Critical Thinking and EPQ are not accepted as a third A-level. GCSE: seven subjects, including English Language or Literature at grade A/7 or higher, Mathematics at grade A/7 or higher, and Biology and Chemistry, or dual award science, at grade A*/8 or higher. Contextual applicants are screened against a contextual offer that Birmingham states as 'typically AAB', rather than the standard AAA, and eligibility rests on having received Free School Meals in the last six years or having spent time in local authority care. A separate Pathways to Birmingham route carries an alternative offer of ABB including Chemistry and Biology, with minimum predicted BBB.

Personal statement

Reviewed and used, which makes Birmingham Dentistry one of the few schools where the statement carries real weight. Statements are reviewed for motivation to do the course, specific mentions of dentistry, and the reasoning behind the application, so a statement written generically for medicine and dentistry together is a visible weakness here.

Worth knowing: Birmingham states there is no minimum UCAT cut-off score, and that it is not possible to advise on a threshold because it varies each year with the number and quality of applications received. It also states that the band score for the Situational Judgement Test component of the UCAT will not be used at any stage, while adding that this may change in the future. The order of operations is the thing to take away: academic requirements first, then the personal statement, read for motivation for the course and reasoning behind the application, then the UCAT score to decide who is offered an interview. Birmingham warns that the exact shortlisting mechanism may change annually with applicant numbers.
