Foundation and Gateway Years in Medicine and Dentistry

27 UK foundation, gateway and Year 0 courses into medicine and dentistry, at 22 universities. Each is described in the school's own words and linked to the page it came from.

What these courses are

Some medicine and dentistry courses begin with an extra first year before the degree itself. Schools call it a foundation year, a gateway year, Year 0, or something else, and this page keeps each school's own name for it.

Each course here has its own UCAS code and leads into a medicine or dentistry degree at the same school, as long as you meet the condition that school sets for moving on.

They are for applicants the school itself says are eligible. Each school sets that eligibility, and it can depend on your circumstances or the education you have had as well as your grades. Read the eligibility line on each course, because it is the school's wording and not ours.

How to read this page

  • Every line on a course is the school's own wording, quoted or closely paraphrased, with a link to the page it was read from and the date we checked it.
  • If a course has no line for something, we have not recorded it yet. Check the school's course page, which is linked on every course.
  • Where a line says the school does not state something, we read the page named beside it and it was not there.
  • Courses are for 2027 entry unless a course is labelled otherwise.
  • A school that is not on this page has not been confirmed either way here. Check its own admissions pages.

Medicine: 23 courses

Courses that lead into a medicine degree.

  • Medicine with Gateway Year

Anglia Ruskin University, UCAS code A101, leads to MBChB

    Who can apply

All students entering the six-year Medicine with Gateway Year course must meet the Widening Access to Medicine Scheme (WAMS). To qualify for WAMS you must have a permanent right or indefinite leave to remain in the UK, or have been granted settled or pre-settled status through the EU Settlement Scheme, and have been ordinarily resident in the UK for the three years prior to the start of the course; and not have undertaken or started another degree prior to applying. You must also meet either of the following. First option: be a Care Leaver for a period of 13 weeks or more spanning your 16th birthday, or have been Care Experienced for a period of longer than 3 months within the last 5 years; or have attended a school for GCSEs which has an attainment 8 score (in England) below the national average; or have been in receipt of free school meals at any time in the past 5 years. Second option: attended a non-selective state school for GCSEs and meet one of these criteria: live in an area with an Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) in the bottom 20%; in receipt of Pupil Premium funding and/or discretionary school or college payments directly linked to financial hardship; you or your parent(s) or guardian(s) are in receipt of means tested benefits; a registered young carer, or a person who has sole unpaid caring responsibility for another person; in receipt of a UCAT bursary; refugee status; a young person estranged from your family; a member of the Gypsy, Traveller, Roma, Showmen or Boater community (GTRSB); or a Service Child whose parent or carer currently serves in the UK Armed Forces. The school says graduate, internal transfer and access applicants are not eligible for this scheme.

    UCAT

All applicants must take the UCAT in the summer before submitting their application, that is in July to September. The school says: "While we include the UCAT score within our selection process, we do not have a standard cut-off value." Applicants are ranked by their UCAT score, including any uplifts applied, and a certain number are invited to an Interview Day, provided they meet the main academic entry requirements. Applicants with an SJT score of Band 4 (lowest band) will not be invited for interview. The school says it is not possible to give applicants an indication of the score that is required to attend an Interview Day. If your home address is in the East of England region (Essex, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire) up to one academic year prior to the time of your application, your UCAT score will be uplifted by 5% for Essex and 2.5% for East of England.

    Interview

Interviews for 2027 entry will be held on 14 January 2027. The Interview Day consists of Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs): a series of six mini-interviews, each lasting seven minutes, with two minutes reading of instructions outside each station. The interviews are carried out by members of the course team, healthcare professionals, junior doctors and service users. The school says offers are based solely on MMI ranking, as all applicants who have reached this stage will be considered to be academically able to complete the course. The school says: "Please note the guaranteed interview is not available to applicants for Medicine with Gateway Year."

    Notes

You may submit an application to either A100 Medicine or A101 Medicine with Gateway Year. Where applications are received for both programmes, the university will assess the application and determine the most appropriate programme for consideration. Applicants to A101 who meet the entry requirements for A100 Medicine will be considered for A100 Medicine, and their application will be transferred to that programme. Once you have submitted your UCAS form and are predicted to meet the main academic entry requirements, the school will send you a WAMS Eligibility Questionnaire, which you must complete and return to the Admissions Team to be considered for the Gateway to Medicine programme.

    UCAT

The school says applicants are required to take the UCAT Medical Admissions Test prior to application, that UCAT scores form part of the selection process, and that UCAT scores can only be used to support an application if they were achieved in the relevant admissions cycle. Applicants who meet the minimum academic criteria are ranked according to their UCAT scores and a UCAT threshold is set depending on the number of interviews to be held. Any candidate scoring within band 4 in the Situational Judgement Test is automatically rejected. The UCAT threshold is extended for candidates who meet specific widening participation criteria or have successfully completed the Widening Access to Medicine Programme at Edge Hill University.

    Interview

The school's 2027 course page lists Stage 3 of selection as interview, with details still to be confirmed. Its Admissions and Selection Supplement, dated October 2023 and linked from that page, says Stage 3 is Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs): all candidates who progress from the UCAT ranking stage are required to attend interview, and the interview takes the form of MMIs which assess a range of skills and attributes. The supplement lists motivation for wanting to join the programme, verbal communication skills, integrity, teamwork and leadership, empathy and compassion, awareness of current health challenges, and ethical awareness among them.

    UCAT

All applicants must take the UCAT in the year of application. The school says applicants with a total UCAT score lower than 1,700 or a situational judgement test (SJT) result in band 4 will not be considered. For 2027 entry, applicants who meet the essential criteria, academic requirements and minimum UCAT requirement are ranked for invitation to interview on the basis of the UCAT score and personal statement as described for the A100 programme. The school says it is unable to state in advance the threshold score for interview, as this will depend on the scores achieved by the new cohort of applicants.

    Interview

The school says interviews will be conducted online using Microsoft Teams, and that the interview takes the form of two interviews of 15 minutes each, usually 2 hours apart, with some materials to be read in advance. UCAT

All applicants must sit the UCAT before applying, in the same year they apply. The school says: "For the most recent admissions cycle, applications were assessed using a ranking process that considered UCAT performance, GCSE grades and widening participation indicators. No minimum UCAT threshold score was applied." The school also says the level of UCAT performance required for interview may vary from year to year depending on the strength of the applicant cohort. The overall UCAT score is considered as part of the shortlisting process. In the school's words, "Individual UCAT subtest scores are not considered separately, and the Situational Judgement Test (SJT) is not taken into account when shortlisting."

    Interview

No offers are made without an interview. Interviews are usually held between December and April, and during the current admissions cycle interviews will be conducted remotely. Applicants selected for interview are typically invited on a rolling basis from December. The school says interviews are designed to assess communication skills, ethical reasoning, understanding of current and relevant healthcare issues, motivation for studying Medicine and overall suitability for the programme and the medical profession. Interviewers have no prior knowledge of candidates before they meet them and complete standardised assessment criteria for all candidates. The school operates a fit-to-sit policy for interviews, so it is unable to take mitigating circumstances into account when reviewing interview performance.

Six years, or seven if an optional intercalated degree is undertaken, starting in September 2027. The school teaches Stage 1 of the curriculum over two years, allowing additional time for self-directed study and a range of extra academic tuition and pastoral support. The school says the EMDP lasts six or seven (with the intercalated iBSc) years, allowing you to study the first stage at a slower pace. At the end of the course you graduate with the same MBBS qualification.

The school will only consider your application for the EMDP if you apply for UCAS course code A101. If you also wish to be considered for the standard entry course, you must apply to UCAS course code A100 as well as A101, and the school considers each application separately. The school says the EMDP is specifically designed for students who are studying A-levels or Access to Medicine at a non-selective state school. The intercalated BSc is optional for students on the EMDP and can be taken between Stages 2 and 3 of the course.

    UCAT

The school requires every applicant to take the UCAT, taken in the summer before application. Applicants who meet its academic requirements are ranked according to their overall UCAT score, and invitations to interview are made based on that ranking. The school says it will give preference to applicants with an SJT score in bands 1 to 3. It publishes its previous UCAT cut-off scores on its Admissions Data page.

    Interview

Applicants who meet the requirements and score competitively on their UCAT are invited to interview, held in January and February. The school uses the multiple mini interview format: applicants complete a number of stations, each assessed by a trained interviewer who may be university staff, an NHS clinician, a GP, a patient and public representative or a medical student. Applicants are ranked on their overall MMI score and offers are made to the highest scoring applicants. The school says no offers are made without attending an interview.

For 2026 entry (a cycle the school says is still live) the school's admissions data lists an interview cut-off score of 1870 and an average score of applicants of 1833 for Medicine and Surgery with a Gateway Year (A104). For 2025 entry it lists 168 applications, 153 eligible applications, 46 interview places available, 31 offers made, 0 placed from the reserve list and 15 students enrolled. Earlier years listed for this programme: 187 applications for 2021, 208 for 2022, 182 for 2023 and 106 for 2024; offers made were 18 for 2021, 21 for 2022, 18 for 2023 and 23 for 2024; students enrolled were 15 for 2021, 15 for 2022, 14 for 2023 and 14 for 2024. Moving on to the degree

The school says that on successful completion of the Gateway Year programme you will progress to the five year MBChB programme, where over a further five years at Lancaster Medical School you will accumulate the knowledge and develop the skills required for modern clinical practice. The Gateway Year is designed to prepare you for successful progression onto Year 1 of the MBChB.

School's own page: source (checked 2026-10-07)
    Notes

The school says a personal statement is required with the UCAS application but is not scored at any stage of its admissions process; it uses the interview to learn about your background and experiences. Applicants who have lived in the UK for less than 5 years at the point of application must show proficiency in English, for example IELTS with a minimum score of 7.0 and no component less than 7.0; the school lists exceptions, including applicants whose first language is English and who have always been a resident and citizen of a majority English speaking country, recognised by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). The school can consider GCSE resits where the required grades are achieved within two attempts, and does not normally accept applicants who took longer than two years to meet the A level requirements unless they can evidence that they missed the majority of a year of study through exceptional circumstances. It does not accept reapplications from candidates who were unsuccessful after interview in a previous cycle, but if you were rejected before interview you may reapply if you can demonstrate additional work experience and self-reflection.

    UCAT

UEA says all applicants must sit the UCAT in the year of application, prior to applying. UEA says it does not have a cut off score, that a high score is advantageous, and that a low score does not disqualify an applicant from consideration. Who can apply

For entry in 2027 the school says candidates must be identified within one of these categories: resident in Scotland in an area with a postcode within the lowest 20% of the Scottish index of multiple deprivation (SIMD0-20); resident in Scotland and care experienced (young person in care or care leaver); a young person resident in Scotland and estranged from family; refugee status with the right to remain and study; or asylum seeker status with the right to study. Otherwise candidates must meet a minimum of two from this list: registered with (or eligible for) the Reach Programme Scotland, or completed or participating in SWAP Access to Medical Studies; attends a Remote and Rural target school; can provide verifiable independent evidence of being a carer. Apart from asylum seekers and those with refugee status, the school can only consider candidates who have been resident in Scotland for a minimum of three years before applying. Candidates in S6 are expected to pass all courses undertaken in their S6 programme of study, with a minimum of grade C in any Advanced Highers taken. The school also lists completion of either the SWAP Access to Medical Sciences course offered at Glasgow Clyde College or the SWAP Access to Medical Studies course offered at Glasgow Kelvin College with the minimum result of Merit. Interview

For 2027 entry the school says interviews will be conducted online, and will take place in February and March 2027 unless otherwise stated. It says the Gateway to Medicine interview follows the same format as its standard MBChB interviews. Applicants are interviewed by two interviewers, who cover both Panel A and Panel B, in a session of 30 minutes in total. Panel A explores motivation to becoming a doctor, teamwork and related topics. Panel B focuses on communication and includes discussion of an ethical scenario, with applicants choosing one from two given scenarios. Interview invites are sent between February and March. If an applicant has interviewed for the A100 MBChB programme and has also applied for the Gateway to Medicine programme, only one interview is conducted, because the interview format and questions are the same, and the same interview score is used for both programmes.

It says UCAT is not a requirement for progression to MBChB. A student who does not achieve the required grade to progress to Year 1 MBChB, or decides against continuing, will have the opportunity to transfer to Year 2 of a Life Sciences degree, assuming they satisfy the university's normal progression criteria. On widening participation it says applicants must be in S6 or SWAP, and meet one of: lives in a SIMD1 postcode; care experienced; estranged from family; holds refugee status with the right to remain and study; holds asylum seeker status with the right to study. Or they must meet two of: registered with or eligible for REACH; completed or participating in SWAP Access to Medical Studies; student carer; attends a Remote and Rural target school, or attends a different school but is resident on the Island Cluster. Grades and subjects

A level: BBC including Chemistry or Biology at B grade; Physics or Maths must also be taken if Chemistry is not taken. Chemistry with Biology and Human Biology, and Chemistry with Mathematics and Further Mathematics, are not acceptable combinations. GCSE: a minimum of 6 GCSEs at grade C or above (or 4 or above) including Maths, English Language, Biology and Chemistry (or Dual Science or Double Science); the school says applicants applying with these minimums are "unlikely to be shortlisted to interview" and that scoring is based on 8 GCSEs, and applicants studying both Chemistry and Biology who are predicted ABB or greater with the A in Chemistry or Biology, and who meet the Widening Participation criteria, are not eligible to apply to A101 and should apply via the Access to Leeds route to the Medicine and Surgery MBChB course. Applicants predicted ABB without the A in Chemistry or Biology, and applicants not taking both Chemistry and Biology A-levels, should apply to A101 if they meet the Widening Participation criteria. Applicants need to show evidence of being within full-time education in the last 5 years. From 2026 entry onwards the school accepts one resit attempt per Level 3 (A2) and per Level 2 (GCSE) qualification without mitigating circumstances.

    UCAT

All applicants for the MBChB and Gateway Year to Medicine course are required to take UCAT, and the test must be taken in the year of application. The school does not accept other aptitude tests instead, for example BMAT or GAMSAT. Interview shortlisting uses a points-based system that considers your top eight GCSE results, your top three predicted grades, your overall UCAT score and contextual information, and the school says there is no fixed UCAT cut-off score. It says the decision to make an offer after interview depends entirely on performance at interview, not on predicted or achieved academic performance, or UCAT scores.

Candidates who apply to more than one vocational course in the School of Medicine will only be considered for one course, so candidates cannot apply to the Gateway to Medicine and Medicine programmes in the same application cycle. Applications are made through UCAS by 15 October of the year preceding entry; the school does not accept applications for the Gateway Year to Medicine after this deadline and does not participate in UCAS Extra. The school does not usually enter Clearing for the course, but usually operates a waitlist for applicants who narrowly missed out on an offer at the interview stage. The page lists the UCAT fee of £70, with a full widening participation bursary available, and a bursary of up to £100 towards travel and hotel costs for students attending interview.

  • Interdisciplinary Science with Foundation Year BSc

University of Leeds, UCAS code CFG0, leads to MBChB or BChD

    Who can apply

The school says progression onto Medicine and Surgery and onto Dental Surgery from this foundation year is available to mature applicants only. It classes mature as being over 21 or out of compulsory education for three years or more at the point of entry. To be considered for the Interdisciplinary Science foundation year, applicants must not meet the admissions criteria for direct entry onto the first year of their chosen progression course. For progression onto healthcare courses, the school says it is oversubscribed, does not automatically admit any applicant who meets the criteria, and invites to interview only those applicants meeting the criteria most significantly.

    Moving on to the degree

For Dental Surgery and Medicine and Surgery, the school says progression from the foundation year is based on passing the foundation year and achieving the grades required from the foundation modules for progression onto your chosen course. The grades required are set at the beginning of each academic year and are subject to change from one cohort to another, and students are given the details for their course progression at the beginning of the foundation year. The school says the grades achieved during the foundation year are not used to rank applicants. Before progressing onto healthcare courses, successful applicants will also need to pass health and criminal record screening.

University of Liverpool, UCAS code 789S, leads to MBChB

    Who can apply

The school says this programme is designed for mature and non-traditional students who typically have taken a break from studies. International applicants are not eligible to apply and deferred entry is not considered. Applicants should normally have been out of education for at least 5 years and be considered ineligible to apply to either of the MBChB programmes. Applicants who hold degrees are considered ineligible. The school will consider mature students who have recently studied an access course (that is not eligible for direct entry to the A100 programme) or who offer work-related qualifications if they can also offer the minimum GCSE requirements, and will consider extenuating circumstances that warrant candidates applying with more recent qualifications on a case-by-case basis.

Students currently studying a BTEC level 3 will not be considered, and BTEC level 2 will not be accepted in lieu of GCSE. Applicants currently studying for the International Baccalaureate, Irish Leaving Certificate, Scottish Highers or Welsh Baccalaureate will not be considered. The school says entry is competitive and it may not always be possible to interview all applicants who meet the minimum academic and non-academic criteria. Applicants who are considered eligible to apply directly to the A100 or A101 programmes will be deemed unsuccessful. Priority in the decision-making process will be given to those with achieved qualifications at the time of application. Applicants may be considered if they have resat GCSEs as a way to re-enter education, and in general only one attempt at resitting an individual subject would be accepted. Deferred entry is not available for this route. Students will be required to undertake an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check and an occupational health check if they progress to the A100 MBChB programme. The school says applications from individuals who have studied medicine and failed to progress at other medical schools are "unlikely to be successful".

    Moving on to the degree

Plymouth says successfully completing the Foundation Year (Year 0) does not result in a standalone qualification, but it does guarantee progression to stage 1 of the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery course, provided you meet the necessary entry requirements at the end of the year. You are enrolled directly onto Stage 1 of the standard BMBS programme without needing to undertake any further assessments. Plymouth says it is unable to support transfer from its Foundation year to year 1 of other medical schools.

    Notes

Plymouth says it will only consider an application from each candidate for either this course (A102) or the five-year BMBS (A100), and that offers will not be made for both programmes. UCAS applications close at 18:00 (GMT) on 15 October. Re-sit applicants are considered: if applying with predicted grades, a minimum of BCC must be achieved on first sitting of A level, and full A levels must be completed within the stated timeframe, with no AS level resit policy. All students enrolled on the BMBS with integrated Foundation Year receive a £500 bursary from the James Johnston Bursary Fund during the Foundation Year.

King's College London, UCAS code A206, leads to BDS

    Who can apply

To be eligible to be considered you must have attended only non-selective state education within a London borough, as determined by the UK government's Department for Education (DfE), since the age of 11. You list all schools attended since the age of 11 on your UCAS application; the schools are checked via the DfE, and the school says there is not a published list of schools to consult. Applicants cannot have started or completed a degree before submitting their application, and applicants attending Grammar Schools are not eligible to apply and should apply to the standard Dentistry programme. The London borough requirement is waived for King's K+ Widening Participation students. The school says students with Overseas fee status are ineligible to apply, irrespective of the criteria above.

If you are taking linear A-levels in England you will be required to pass the practical endorsement in all Science subjects, except for private candidates who are unable to take the practical component. The school says: "We do not consider the EPQ at any point of the assessment process." International Baccalaureate: 35 points overall or an aggregate score of 17 from three Higher Levels, including grade 6 Higher Level in Chemistry or Biology and grade 5 Higher Level in one of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics or Psychology. UCAT

All applicants must sit the UCAT before applying, in the same year they apply. The school says: "King's does not have a threshold UCAT score in any particular year, as it is dependent upon the range of scores received each cohort." The overall UCAT score averaged across the four subtests is given more consideration than the individual subtest scores, and the Situational Judgement Test (SJT) is also taken into account when shortlisting. Applications are ranked based on GCSE or IGCSE performance, UCAT score and contextual information.

    Interview

The interview period generally runs from December to March, and the school aims to send invitations via King's Apply with at least two weeks notice of an interview date. The school says: "Interviews are conducted remotely with a panel of two interviewers. In previous years, interviews have taken the form of Multi Mini Interviews (MMIs) in person, with six interviewers." Interviewers assess communication skills, explore general social and ethical issues, normally health related, and assess the interviewee's general suitability for the programme and as a health professional. The school operates a fit-to-sit policy for interviews, so it is unable to take into account mitigating circumstances for interview performance.

    Notes

Plymouth says it will only consider an application from each candidate for either BDS Dental Surgery or BDS Dental Surgery with Integrated Foundation Year, and that offers will not be made for both programmes. UCAS applications close at 18:00 (GMT) on 15 October, and Plymouth says it cannot permit deferred entry. Re-sit applicants are considered: if applying with predicted grades, a minimum of BCC must be achieved on first sitting of A level, and full A levels must be completed within the stated timeframe, with no AS level resit policy. Plymouth says it is unable to accept international applicants for this programme going forward (2024 entry onwards).
