How the UCAT is weighted

HYMS awards points for total UCAT score and for UCAT SJT Band as part of its ranking of applicants for interview. HYMS does not publish how many points of the total come from UCAT, nor does it describe the scoring as decile-based; no HYMS page found in this audit confirms the '35 of 100' figure.

A-level requirements

Offer AAA including Biology and Chemistry, but applications are screened on a minimum prediction of AAB. Contextual offer AAB including Biology and Chemistry, and applicants on a recognised longitudinal widening participation programme may apply with predictions of ABB. All third subjects are accepted except General Studies, Applied Science, Citizenship and Critical Thinking. GCSEs: six at grade 9/A* to 4/C or equivalent, including English Language and Maths at grade 6/B or above.

Resits

Year 12 may be repeated or restarted without restriction. Repeating Year 13 is conditional: applicants who are repeating or have repeated Year 13 must have achieved at least BBB in their initial sitting, so a weak first attempt closes the door rather than being cancelled by a strong second. GCSE resits to reach the entry requirement are accepted.

Personal statement

Not scored, but decisive at the margin, which is the most useful thing to know about it. HYMS says it does not score the statement, and that it carefully examines all the information on the UCAS form when deciding on candidates who are borderline either at selection for interview or at selection for offer. It also warns that fabricated or exaggerated material, or similarity to other statements, may lead to a future offer being withdrawn.

Worth knowing: Hull York publishes no UCAT threshold, and the SJT band is a hard gate rather than a scored component: its entry requirements list, alongside A-levels and GCSEs, that an applicant must "sit the UCAT in the year of application, and achieve an SJT Band score of 1, 2, or 3". A Band 4 therefore fails an eligibility criterion rather than simply scoring fewer points.
