A-level requirements

Offer AAA, but shortlisting requires predicted grades of AAB or above, and the offer must include any two of Biology, Chemistry and Psychology. If Biology or Chemistry is not taken at A-level, that subject is required at GCSE grade A/7. Only one of Maths and Further Maths counts. Applicants meeting the widening participation criteria who are successful at interview may receive a contextual offer of ABB. GCSEs: at least 13 points across eight subjects, where grades 9-7 score 2 points and grade 6 scores 1, with a minimum of grade 6/B at first attempt in Biology, Chemistry, Physics (or Combined Science: Trilogy), English Language and Maths.

Resits

A-level resits are accepted but at a higher bar: A*AA rather than the standard AAA, achieved within three years of study, and the applicant must reflect on their circumstances in the personal statement. Applicants who retook or restarted Year 12, resat A-levels, or took additional subjects after Year 13 are all considered on the same basis. For applicants applying during their resit year there is a first-attempt floor: ABB must have been achieved at the first attempt in the absence of exceptional circumstances, and BBB-CCC is only considered with evidence of exceptional circumstances. GCSE resits are NOT accepted unless exceptional circumstances are clearly evidenced at the time of application. Lancaster also does not accept reapplications from candidates who were unsuccessful after interview in a previous cycle, though those rejected before interview may reapply if they can demonstrate additional work experience and self-reflection.

Personal statement

Not scored. Lancaster states it does not score or rank the personal statement at any stage of its admissions process, and uses the interview to learn about the candidate instead. The one exception is practical rather than scored: a resitting applicant is expected to explain their circumstances there.

Worth knowing: Lancaster publishes a cut-off for every route on the current scale: for 2026 entry, 1920 standard UK, 1870 UK contextual, 1900 overseas and 1870 for the Gateway Year. Its admissions data page shows the 2025 entry row directly above, reading 2580, 2470, 2440 and 2430, and those are on the old 3,600 scale rather than the current 2,700 one, so the two rows are not the same unit and the drop is not a fall in standards. Lancaster's how-to-apply page states it will not consider applicants with an SJT score in band 4. Borderline widening participation candidates may be interviewed on a lower threshold. Always confirm against the official page before applying, since this is the most recent published position rather than a guarantee for the live cycle.
