How the UCAT is weighted

UCAT score used in selection ranking alongside academic achievement and contextual factors, but no published minimum cut-off for the current cycle.

SJT policy

Newcastle uses the SJT band twice: candidates in Band 4 are eliminated before interview, and Bands 1–3 contribute points (5/3/1) to the final Interview score, weighted the same as one interview station.

A-level requirements

Typical offer AAA, or ABB for contextual applicants and for those entering through one of Newcastle's supported entry programmes. A-levels should include Biology or Chemistry plus one of Biology, Chemistry, Maths, Further Maths, Statistics or Physics, and a pass in the practical element is required for Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Resits are allowed over a maximum of two sittings, but the offer goes up one grade: AAA becomes A*AA, and ABB becomes AAB or A*BB. Grades are scored rather than screened, on whichever qualifications are most recent. The best three A-levels score up to 40 points, with A* worth 16, A worth 12 and B worth 8; for an applicant whose most recent results are GCSEs, the best eight GCSEs score up to 40 points instead, with grade 9 worth 5 points, grade 8 worth 4, grade 7 worth 3, grade 6 worth 1 and grade 5 worth none, and a resat GCSE is scored on the most recent grade. Newcastle's current admissions policy does not repeat the older rule about offering Chemistry or Biology at AS level with the other at GCSE, and it publishes no list of A-levels it refuses to count.

Interview

Resits

Newcastle does publish an A-level resit rule for 2027: 'we will accept a resit result, provided the subject has been retaken no more than once and the grade achieved is one grade higher than our standard offer (e.g. A* instead of A)', and 'Applicants are not required to inform the University of the circumstances around their resits.' The published offer table sets the resit price: against a usual offer of AAA the resit offer is A*AA, and against ABB it is AAB or A*BB. Where A levels have been completed over three years, applicants with extenuating circumstances for that are considered individually. GCSE resits are accepted and count fully: where a candidate has resat a GCSE, the most recent attained grade is the one scored, so a resit replaces rather than supplements the original in Newcastle's points model.

Personal statement

Not used, and Newcastle says so outright: 'Selectors will not have access to the applicant's personal statement or reference, either prior to and during an interview.' Selection runs on an academic screen (GCSE points out of 40, A-level points out of 40 for A100 home applicants, and UCAT out of 60) and then an interview score, weighted 50:50, with no share for the statement at any stage.

Worth knowing: Newcastle does not rank on a raw UCAT total. Home A100 applicants are scored out of 100: up to 40 points for their most recent set of grades and up to 60 for the UCAT, and the highest scorers are invited, with contextual and widening participation applicants ranked as a separate stream rather than against the core group. Its published interview thresholds for 2021 to 2024 entry are raw UCAT scores on the old 3,600 maximum and cannot be set beside a score sat today; for 2025 entry it published a combined academic score threshold of 50 out of 100 instead of a UCAT figure. Core applicants invited to interview for 2025 entry averaged 82 out of 100 overall, 37 of the 40 grade points and 45 of the 60 UCAT points, while widening participation applicants averaged 70, 34 and 36. The lowest UCAT among interviewed applicants scored 10 of the 60 points, which Newcastle equates to about 1900 under that year's scoring, and the lowest GCSE score of 16 points is four grade 6s and four grade 7s. Its international thresholds were higher than the core ones in most years shown, but equal in 2021 and lower in 2023, so international is not reliably the higher bar. Band 4 in the SJT ends an application whatever the total. Always confirm against the official page before applying, since this is the most recent published position rather than a guarantee for the live cycle.
