How the UCAT is weighted

Applicants who meet minimum academic and UCAT thresholds are ranked by UCAT score to determine interview invitations. Widening-participation applicants on recognised pathways who meet the minimum threshold progress without competitive ranking.

SJT policy

SJT performance is reviewed only for applicants invited to interview, not used pre-interview. At interview stage, the SJT quartile converts to a score out of 5, added to the interview score for a combined total out of 45.

A-level requirements

Standard offer AAA including Chemistry or Biology and a second science, plus a pass in the practical element of any science A-levels taken. Accepted second sciences are Biology or Human Biology, Chemistry, Maths, Physics or Psychology. An alternative offer of AAB is available with a fourth Level 3 qualification, requiring Chemistry or Biology at grade A, a second science, and grade A in the EPQ taken in the same sitting, and is conditional on making Sheffield the firm choice. Sheffield does not accept A-level Further Maths towards its academic threshold. GCSEs: five at grade 7/A, with at least grade 6/B in Maths, English Language and the science subjects; Dual Award Science is also acceptable.

Interview

Both an MMI and a panel, depending on the applicant, 8 stations, both, depending on the applicant, December to January.

Resits

An A-level taken after two years of study counts as a resit if you already hold that certification from one year. Resitting applicants cannot use an EPQ to drop the offer from AAA to AAB, and must achieve AAA across the reattempt.

Personal statement

Not normally read at all, which is stronger than not scored: Sheffield says it does not normally read or score UCAS personal statements as part of selection, and that interviewers will not have read yours, though you can expect questions on the topics applicants usually write about. The single exception is punitive rather than evaluative: if UCAS flags plagiarism the application is unsuccessful regardless of anything else.

Worth knowing: Sheffield expects to invite approximately 1,100 home applicants and 100 international applicants for the five-year MBChB, plus 40 to 60 for graduate entry. The 1800 out of 2,700 minimum for 2027 entry is the 40th centile score attained by everyone who took the test across the 2024, 2025 and 2026 entry cycles, so it tracks the national cohort rather than being a standard Sheffield sets. Meeting it does not get you an interview: everyone above it is ranked on UCAT score and only the highest progress, and that ranking cutpoint sits well above the minimum and moves every year.
