University of St Andrews Medicine: UCAT, A-Levels & Interview Requirements
University of St Andrews has not published a fixed UCAT cut-off for 2027 entry. Here's how UCAT, A-levels, SJT and the interview all fit together for medicine.

- How the UCAT is weighted
- St Andrews does not score applications component by component. Applicants who meet its requirements are ranked on the basis of their UCAT global score, and those ranked in the top 650 or so are given an interview. Decisions to make offers are based on the interview score, and where applicants have the same interview score the global UCAT score is used to differentiate between them. Widening participation applicants who meet, or are predicted to meet, the required academic grades and who meet any of a list of criteria are given a 10 per cent increase in their UCAT score, which is used in the ranking for invitation to interview.

- St Andrews' official pages do not name the Situational Judgement Test or state any SJT band cut-off; only the UCAT global score is described as used for ranking.
- A-level requirements
- Standard offer AAA including Chemistry and one of Biology, Mathematics or Physics. St Andrews publishes two tiers on the same subjects: standard entry grades of AAA and minimum entry grades of AAB, so an applicant predicted AAB is inside the bar St Andrews screens on rather than ruled out by the standard offer. GCSEs: minimum five at grade A/7, taken at one sitting. Scottish Higher route: AAAAB in S5, predicted at least BBB in Highers/Advanced Highers.

- Resits
- Closed by default, and one of the strictest in the UK. St Andrews states that "Applicants who re-take their advanced level studies to meet the entry requirements for Medicine will not normally be considered". The exception is narrow: applicants with extenuating circumstances whose grades were borderline, typically one grade below the requirement. GCSE resits are treated differently - "Re-sitting GCSEs (or equivalent) is allowed if the purpose is to meet a specific subject requirement". Reapplication is also capped: an unsuccessful applicant to A100, A10c or A990 "can submit one new application in a different year if they meet the entry requirements. Beyond that, further applications will not be considered."
- Personal statement
- Assessed as a hurdle, not a score. St Andrews says "A 'hurdle' based approach is taken to assessing applications - your application will not be scored nor will weighting be applied to specific parts of your application", with the selection process covering academic performance, the personal statement and reference, and UCAT together. To reach interview an applicant needs a strong academic record, a positive reference and relevant medically related work experience; those who clear the hurdles are then ranked on UCAT global score alone. The school is unusually explicit about what the statement must evidence: empathy, communication and listening, leadership, teamwork, commitment to academic study, resilience, perseverance and intellectual potential, plus paid or unpaid work or shadowing in a caring or health environment.

St Andrews' own page says the 2025 maximum is 2700 and then reports offer-holder means of 2736, 2923 and 3016 for the same cycle, which is impossible on that scale, so the whole table is read here as the old 3,600 one and none of it can be compared with a current score. Domicile changes the bar enormously: for 2025-26 the mean UCAT of offer holders was 2736 for Scottish applicants, 2923 for rest of UK and 2837 for overseas, and the lowest interviewed was 2230, 2400 and 2660 respectively. A rest-of-UK applicant faces a materially harder route than a Scottish one.

St Andrews counts three fee statuses separately, and the Scotland-domiciled figures on their own describe a very different competition from the rest-of-UK ones beside them. Offer rates: 216 from 417 Scotland-domiciled is 51.8%, 90 from 335 rest-of-UK is 26.9%, and 105 from 303 overseas is 34.7%.

Worth checking directly
St Andrews' published admissions table labels its UCAT range as being out of 3000. No version of the UCAT has had a 3,000 maximum: the current test is out of 2,700 and the previous one was out of 3,600. Its UCAT figures are therefore not reproduced here, because it is not possible to say from the source which scale they are on. Confirm directly with admissions before comparing your own score against them.
National benchmark, for context
For context, the UCAT Consortium's own 2026 statistics report a mean cognitive score of 1918 (out of 2,700) across 42,359 tests, with the median (5th decile) at 1920 and the top decile at 2250+. This is a national figure, not University of St Andrews's own threshold, since University of St Andrews doesn't publish one for the current cycle.

Across all fee statuses the number interviewed has climbed steadily in St Andrews' own tables, from 471 in 2020/21 and 500 in 2021/22 to 649 in 2024/25, which matches the roughly 650 interviews it now says it offers. Applicants meeting the academic bar are ranked on UCAT global score for interview, and widening participation applicants get a 10 per cent uplift applied to their UCAT before that ranking. Offers then rest on interview score. St Andrews states that there have been significant changes to the 2025 UCAT, that the highest score now achievable is 2700, and that historical UCAT data will therefore not be comparable with 2026 results. Always confirm against the official page before applying, since this is the most recent published position rather than a guarantee for the live cycle.
