How the UCAT is weighted

Threshold calculated annually after November UCAT results are released; not published in advance. If interview places are oversubscribed among otherwise-qualified candidates, the university ranks by UCAT total score and SJT band.

SJT policy

Only Band 1 or 2 is considered. Applicants achieving Band 3 or 4 are not considered further.

A-level requirements

AAA including Biology/Human Biology or Chemistry, plus one of Chemistry, Biology/Human Biology, Physics, Psychology, Mathematics or Further Mathematics. The third subject is free, but Manchester will not make an offer on very similar pairings such as Biology with Human Biology or Maths with Further Maths, and a pass in the practical element of any science A-level is required. Contextual offer AAB, and ABB for UK refugee or care-experienced applicants, with the same subject requirements. GCSEs: at least seven at grade A(7) or A*(8) or above, including English Language, Maths and at least two sciences at minimum grade 6(B), with Dual Award or Core and Additional Science accepted at BB(66). English Literature is not accepted in place of English Language, and applicants confirmed as WP+ or WP++ on the University's contextual data tool need six at grade 7(A) or above rather than seven.

Interview

Resits

Resits accepted with conditions. Manchester welcomes applications from those re-sitting their A-levels, but applicants may only re-sit one of either Year 12 or Year 13. Where A-levels have been attempted in Year 13, applicants are expected to have obtained a minimum of grade ABB at the first sitting for the re-sit grades to be considered, and all re-sitting applicants are required to achieve A*A*A rather than the standard AAA. Two separate bars sit alongside this: Manchester does not accept A-level re-sits for the purpose of improving grades from graduates, and if an application has been unsuccessful on two consecutive occasions, future applications will not be considered. For GCSEs, resits are permitted but must be listed as pending on the UCAS form.

Personal statement

Manchester Medicine states it plainly: 'We do not normally read the personal statement; you can leave this section blank if you are only applying to Manchester. However, we reserve the right to use any information we may hold on your application(s).' Selection to interview runs on the UCAT threshold plus SJT band against the minimum academic requirements, and no offer is made without an interview. One live risk remains attached to the statement: 'Any personal statements which we are notified by UCAS as having been identified by the similarity detection service will result in an unsuccessful decision, irrespective of the percentage of similarity detected, or whether we have used your personal statement in the selection process.'
