How the UCAT is weighted

UCAT is used at first shortlisting as a pass/fail floor (4th decile or above, with SJT Bands 1-3), then feeds a weighted score at second shortlisting alongside UCAS tariff (or degree score for graduates) to select interviewees, and may be weighed again post-interview alongside interview score and SJT for final offers.

SJT policy

SJT Band 4 results in automatic rejection at first shortlisting; Bands 1 to 3 are required to proceed, and the SJT score may be reconsidered again at the final offer-decision stage.

A-level requirements

Standard offer A*AA achieved in one sitting over no more than two years, including Biology or Chemistry plus a second science subject. GCSEs: six at grades 777666/AAABBB including Biology, Chemistry, English Language or Literature, and Mathematics. Queen Mary states its standard contextual reduction as 'one grade drop for our Medicine, Dentistry and Law programmes', which from A*AA is AAA. Applicants who have completed one of Queen Mary's sustained or partnered access schemes are offered AAA with a guaranteed interview, and care leavers AAB. The guaranteed interview is conditional on meeting minimum GCSE requirements, being predicted at least AAA, and sitting within or above the UCAT fourth decile with an SJT band of 1 to 3.

Resits

Queen Mary University of London publishes no resit policy. That is not the same as resits being accepted, and it is worth asking admissions directly before relying on either reading.

Personal statement

Not scored, but read at interview. Queen Mary's 2027-entry selection criteria say "The personal statement is not scored as part of the selection process prior, during or after interview", while listing the attributes it should evidence - motivation, insight, communication, teamwork, resilience, empathy, honesty and the rest. Shortlisting runs on a weighted UCAT and academic score instead. The statement still reaches the panel: "If shortlisted for interview, your interview panel will have access to your UCAS application and may ask you questions from the information you have provided."

Worth knowing: Queen Mary expects 311 home places and up to 24 overseas places for September 2027 on the five-year MBBS. A UCAT total below the fourth decile range ends the application at first shortlisting, as does an SJT outside Bands 1 to 3, and clearing both guarantees nothing: applicants are then selected on a weighted score compared with everyone else applying that year, which may combine UCAT score, the UCAS tariff of predicted or achieved qualifications, and weighted scoring of degrees for graduates. A minimum predicted tariff of 152, which is A*AA, is required from the subjects Queen Mary asks for.
