Brighton and Sussex Medical School: UCAT, A-Levels & Interview Requirements

Brighton and Sussex Medical School has not published a fixed UCAT cut-off for 2027 entry. Here's how UCAT, A-levels, SJT and the interview all fit together for medicine.

2027 UCAT cut off
Not published
How the UCAT is weighted
BSMS does not publish a numeric UCAT cut-off. After screening for academic qualifications, UCAT total score is used to rank and select candidates for interview, but only among applicants who scored SJT band 1, 2 or 3.
SJT policy
The SJT subsection is used as a hard gate before interview selection: candidates scoring Band 4 are rejected. Candidates with Band 1 to 3 proceed to be ranked by UCAT score.
A-level requirements
Standard offer for the current cycle: AAA to include Biology or Chemistry and one further subject from Biology, Chemistry, Maths or Physics (a loosened requirement from the prior cycle, which mandated both Biology and Chemistry). Adjusted/contextual offer AAB, same subject rule. GCSEs: grade 6/B (5/C for adjusted offer) in English and Maths only.
Interview format
Multiple Mini Interview: five stations each lasting 10 minutes with a short break between stations, roughly one hour total. Applicants choose in person (early December or early January) or virtual via Zoom (late January or early February); interviews run December to February.

National benchmark, for context

For context, the UCAT Consortium's own 2025 statistics report a mean cognitive score of 1891 (out of 2,700) across 41,354 tests, with the median (5th decile) at 1880 and the top decile at 2220+. This is a national figure, not Brighton and Sussex Medical School's own threshold, since Brighton and Sussex Medical School doesn't publish one for the current cycle.

Worth knowing: BSMS does not use personal statements at any stage. Qualifications must have been achieved no earlier than August 2017 for the current cycle; UCAT must be sat in the same summer. Always confirm against the official page before applying, since this is the most recent published position rather than a guarantee for the live cycle.
